IWEN's TEN FIRST FEMALE SCHOLARSHIPS
All ten female student scholarships were awarded to victims of conflict living in rural areas. When a father dies or disappears never to be seen again, this leaves the family in dire straits as it is the father who gives status to the mother and children. Mothers then are often left without means to care for their children. Some return to their maternal homes. Some abandon their children. Some do all they can to survive with the help of relatives. Some despair.
Some die and their children are left to fend for themselves.
Many of the 50 candidates had to walk 3 to 4 hours just to get a passport photo taken for their application. IWEN collaborated with the Women's Development Society, a well established women's society that has an extremely efficient mouth to mouth network, which gathers information throughout the country.
The academic year in Nepal begins in April and finishes at the end of March. Since I arrived in October, it was decided to award the 10 scholarships for the school year 2006-2007. These ten candidates were chosen amongst 50 females:
