Local Immigrant Women Program
Working with immigrant women in the Okanagan Valley, BC, Canada
The valley attracts many immigrants. However immigrant women sometimes face difficulties in adapting to their new home. In networking with various local organizations IWEN discovered that some of the problems that immigrant women face are: isolation due to language barriers, domestic violence, new mothers' difficulty attending languages classes, need of life skill training, and need of specific vocational training skills.
Purpose of Program
IWEN is an inter-cultural women's organization that believes that women of different cultures who immigrant to Canada and more specifically to the Okanagan need assistance in integrating themselves into their new community. Local resources are stretched. IWEN's Immigrant Women's Committee has experience in working with immigrant women and volunteers this expertise through networking and helping local Okanagan Non-profit organizations to assist immigrant women settle into their new community.
Cost
All donations earmarked for this program will be used to implement the IWEN's Immigrant Women's Committee's plans. Annually the Immigrant Women's Committee evaluates the needs of immigrant women in collaboration with Okanagan's Local Immigrant Services and prioritizes these needs through the organization of specific programs. Some programs that are being supported by IWEN are:
- English Language classes for new mothers where baby-sitting is provided
- "Taking the Stage Program" which helps immigrant women with self-confidence thus helping them with employment possibilities.
- "Tea with Friends" helps immigrant women deal with isolation and encourages empowerment of these women.
- Food Safe Classes give working opportunities
- Life Skills training sessions
