IWEN's FIRST PRIORITY $450.00 SCHOLARSHIPS:

About Nepal | About IWEN

Mrs. Purna Shova Chitrakar

The founder of Women's Developmental Society

Target Group:

  • Female Victims of Conflict in rural areas

Rational:

  • The nineteen female scholarships indicated in the section entitled "Newly Awarded Candidates" were the first to be awarded by IWEN.  Thanks to the power of love and generosity, these girls have now been sponsored for the upcoming 2007-2008 school year!  There is still a large opportunity to help.  Those who would like to make a donation will have a student selected for them from the list of applicants.
  •  These scholarships need to be honored. Once IWEN commits to sponsoring a female student, it is IWEN's responsibility to continue sponsoring that student until completion of Class 10. It is IWEN's fervent hope that donors will continue sponsoring a girl once they have started.  If a student passes Class 10 School Leaving Exams set by the Ministry of Education, the student can continue on towards higher studies.

Purpose:

  • These females are victims of conflict. They have lost one or both parents in the armed conflict between the Maoists and the State. These females have no possible access to education for several reasons. They either must work to support whatever members of the family remain and care for the younger children, and/or the remaining parent cannot afford even the most basic school fees.

Area:

  • Accessible rural villages where it is safe to provide help to such families

Cost and what it covers:

  • The $450.00 covers the following expenses for one full year:
    • Tuition Fees for private school in the rural district
    • Transportation to and from school
    • School Uniform, shoes, socks
    • Books and stationary
    • School snack
    • Supervision of scholarships – verification and monitoring of students progress and sending reports to donors
    • Minor transportation costs to these rural areas for monitoring purposes.
Names of Newly Awarded Candidates:
  • These nineteen female candidates below have already been sponsored!  However, there are many more female victims of conflict who are still waiting for educational sponsorships.  We have lists of over 100 applicants who can be assigned to those who would like to help.
  • Each candidate has a well documented file. The Women's Development Society's network is surprisingly efficient in gathering information despite the Maoists present occupation of the rural districts of Nepal . Documentation was secured either through friends, municipality personnel, school principals, and/or district education officers. These districts were chosen because they have one of the highest number of recorded deaths/disappearances due to the armed conflict. There is presently a tenuous peace in Nepal with the signing of the Peace Agreement between the Eight Party Coalition and the Maoists.  Much remains to be done but the peace process is a beginning.
  • Each student's story seems sadder and more tragic than the story before. Formal education gives each of these female students hope for some type future. It gives them an opportunity to rebuild their lives within the family that remains.
  • Below students are listed with their names, date of birth, school, class and family story.  Please note when looking at the dates of birth for students that Nepal works with a lunar calendar which is very different from ours - these dates reflect that calendar, where the year is currently 2064, not 2007.
