Teacher Training

Teacher Training

Educating the educators

Though the Nepal Ministry of Education has made positive steps in providing rural schools with trained teacher there are still many village schools who find themselves with teachers that have not received any formal training, which directly affects the students success.

Average cost to support one-year teacher training program involving 30 to 40 teachers: $1,500.00. Donations of ANY AMOUNT towards this program are welcome. This program is initiated whenever the aggregate funding is reached.

About the need

Due to the lack of qualified teachers willing to go to rural Nepal as well as the lack of educational funds to pay for qualified teachers salaries many village schools find themselves without teachers. Because of this problem then those who have successfully finished their Secondary Leaving Examinations are often hired to fill these jobs.

Most of these high school graduates who are hired do not have the opportunity to even basic teacher training. Due to the desperate need for quality education especially in rural schools basic teacher training is an urgent need.

Presently, the Education Ministry due to the present political conditions under which Nepals re-construction is happening cannot fully accommodate this urgent need.

Purpose of Program

Since the level of training and experience is vastly different from one school to another, IWEN is focusing on the formation of teacher coaches. These coaches are trained first in basic instructional methods and then these coaches return to their schools where the teachers are divided into small groups and these coaches teach the teachers. The coaching lessons are then compiled into a "Coaching Handbook," a resource, which remains the property of the teachers and the school.

The teacher training is intended to:

  • develop a simple training curriculum based on a needs assessment given to the teachers concerned
  • develop low cost basic teaching materials which accompany the training topics
  • develop a training plan, which would provide teacher training throughout one school year
  • develop the training plan in such a manner as to train at least 2 of the school's teaching staff as coaches so that they can coach other teachers in their school and thus keep the training received sustainable within the school.

Cost

Approximately $1,500.00 covers the following for one year of teacher training for one school or more schools in a particular area:

  • Training for a team of teacher coaches who will in turn train 30-40 teachers
  • Venue rental
  • Cost of photo-copying materials
  • Materials such as newsprint, markers, tape, paper, pens, copies, binders
  • Purchase of school curriculums as few schools have access to the government curriculum
  • Transportation costs for teacher coaches far from the training venue
  • Transportation costs for teachers attending the training program, who live far from the training venue
  • Small lunch for teacher-coaches and teachers during training days
  • Transportation and meals for the volunteer training facilitators.
