Tharu Mother Literacy Classes

Tharu Mother's Literacy Classes

The mothers of rescued illegally bonded girls asked IWEN for literacy classes. As their daughters gained confidence their mothers realized the importance of education not only for their daughters but also for themselves

About the need

Tharu adult women are illiterate. If their daughters or sons do not attend school these women then are at the mercy of their employers who can easily cheat them in their wages because the women cannot calculate their earnings. Literacy classes teaches simple calculations which empower women in their daily working interactions.

Purpose of Program

Educating mothers facilitates a greater awareness of a womans human rights concerning gender equality and empowers women to be proud of their role in the family and in their community. Literate mothers help in guaranteeing their daughters education so that they can graduate from high school. Research has shown that for every year of schooling a girl receives this gives her child the possibility of an added year of life. Child mortality is diminished with educated mothers.

Cost

All donations earmarked for this program are accumulated until enough funds are collected to provide the opening of a literacy class. The $1,500 provides for the following;

  • Training of facilitators for the class
  • Six month literacy training for 4 to 5 groups of 25 women.
  • Venue rental
  • Books required
  • Stationary
  • Salary of facilitators [1 facilitator for 25 students]
  • Monitoring of the program and report writing
  • A modest end of program celebration

Buy A Brick

For $100 you can buy a brick with your family name on it and have it installed on the walls of the school. You could also dedicate the brick to someone you care about. All proceeds from this will go directly to the Cause and you will be provided a tax receipt for your contribution.
